The MVP of the NHL All-Star Game isn't always one of the big names. Chicago Blackhawks' forward Patrick Sharp was named Most Valuable Player at the 2011 All-Star Game.

Though the NHL All-Star Game has been an annual event since 1947, the NHL All Star Game MVP award was introduced in 1962.

- No winner is listed for 1966 because that was the first season the game was scheduled during a midseason break. Previously, the game had been played during the preseason. So Gordie Howe is the NHL All Star game MVP for the 1965-66 season, and Henri Richard is the MVP for the 1966-67 season.
- In 1978-79 the NHL All Star Game was replaced by the Challenge Cup exhibition series between the NHL All Stars and Soviet Union national team.
- In 1986-87 the NHL All Star Game was replaced by the Rendezvous '87 exhibition series between the NHL All Stars and Soviet Union national team.
- There was no NHL All Star Game in 1994-95, due to a labor dispute that shut down the league.
- There was no NHL All Star Game in 2004-05, due to a labor dispute that shut down the league.
- There was no NHL All Star Game in 2005-06, due to the Winter Olympic Games in Turin, Italy.
