Extra Attacker

By Jamie Fitzpatrick, About.com Guide

Definition: A player, usually a forward, who replaces the goaltender on the ice, so that the team plays with six skaters and an empty net. The tactic is usually used during a delayed penalty, or late in a game when a team is desperate for a goal and willing to risk an empty net in return for the advantage created by an extra attacker.
