Definition: There are two ways an NHL player can qualify as an All Star. One is to be selected to play in the annual NHL All Star Game, where rosters are chosen by fan balloting and a panel of NHL general managers. The other is to be named to the year-end NHL All Star Team, chosen by the media. The top player elected at each position is called a First Team All Star, the runner-up at each position is listed as a Second Team All Star.
