Calgary Flames profile and history

By Jamie Fitzpatrick, About.com

Franchise Profile

Founded: 1972
Formerly known as: Atlanta Flames (1972-1980)
Arena: Pengrowth Saddledome
Stanley Cups won: 1
1989

Having been built into a contender before leaving Atlanta, the Flames were immediately successful in Calgary, advancing to the Stanley Cup semifinals in their first season.

The 1980s proved to be a memorable decade, with the Flames and Edmonton Oilers rising to the top of the NHL and building one of the fiercest rivalries the NHL had ever seen. Gretzky's Oilers generally came out on top. But Calgary finally captured the Stanley Cup in 1989, as the decade drew to a close.

There were lean seasons to follow. But overall, Calgary has remained one of the NHL's most competitive franchises, and home to some of its great stars, including Theoren Fleury and Jarome Iginla.
