The Sharks are one of the great success stories of the NHL's "sunbelt" expansion efforts, having built a consistent winner and loyal fan base. The team got a healthy head start when original owner George Gund was allowed to take several members of the Minnesota North Stars to San Jose, as part of a deal that saw him give up ownership of the Minnesota team and start the Sharks franchise.
The team first made the playoffs in its third season and has often been among the NHL's top regular-season teams since then.
But the Sharks of early 21st century have also been one of the NHL's most disappointing teams, known for following spectacular regular-seasons with playoff failure.
