In two of the closest votes in NHL history, Jose Theodore of the Montreal Canadiens has been named the top goaltender and most valuable player for the 2001-2002 season, leading the list of this year's NHL award winners.
Prior to this year, the tie-breaker system had never been required to determine the winner of an NHL award. But it was needed twice to finalize the 2002 winners list.
In MVP voting by the Professional Hockey Writers' Association, the Canadiens' goaltender finished tied with the NHL scoring champion, Jarome Iginla of the Calgary Flames. Each player accumulated 434 points according to a system that awards points for first, second and third-place votes. Theodore won the Hart Trophy on the tie-breaker, with three more first-place votes than Iginla.
Iginla was the choice of his peers, however. He was named winner of the Lester Pearson Trophy, the MVP as voted by the players.
There was another deadlock in the race for the Vezina Trophy, with Theodore and Colorado's Patrick Roy earning 105 points each. Again Theodore won the tie-breaker with more first-place votes.
Otherwise, there were few surprises on NHL awards night.
