The captain of the Edmonton Oilers has a one-year contract. Defenseman Jason Smith accepted the team's qualifying offer, meaning he will get 10 per cent more than the $2.3-million he earned in 2002-03.
The Phoenix Coyotes have promising goaltender Zac Bierk under contract for one year. Bierk won just four of 16 starts last season, but posted an impressive 2.17 goals-against average and .932 save percentage.
Left winger Daniel Sedin and center Henrik Sedin have re-signed with the Vancouver Canucks. Daniel had 31 points last season, while Henrik recorded 39 points. The 22-year-old twins were selected second and third overall in the 1999 Entry Draft.
