August 10 -

56 points in 71 games earned Michael Nylander a significant raise. The Washington Capitals avoided an arbitration hearing by re-signing Nylander to a one-year contract worth $2.675-million. The 30-year-old center earned $1.8 million last year.

Restricted free agents re-signing August 2-8:
- Center Curtis Brown and winger Ales Kotalik of the Buffalo Sabres.
- Right winger Mike Johnson of the Phoenix Coyotes.
- Forward Justin Papineau of the New York Islanders.
- Defenceman Niclas Havelid of the Anaheim Mighty Ducks.

Restricted free agents re-signing today:
- Center Steve Avery of the Los Angeles Kings.
- Forwards Shawn Horcoff, Marty Reasoner and Raffi Torres of the Edmonton Oilers.
- Center Artem Chubarov of the Vancouver Canucks.
- Forward Eric Boulton and defenseman Henrik Tallinder of the Buffalo Sabres.

July 28 -

The captain of the Edmonton Oilers has a one-year contract. Defenseman Jason Smith accepted the team's qualifying offer, meaning he will get 10 per cent more than the $2.3-million he earned in 2002-03.

The Phoenix Coyotes have promising goaltender Zac Bierk under contract for one year. Bierk won just four of 16 starts last season, but posted an impressive 2.17 goals-against average and .932 save percentage.

Left winger Daniel Sedin and center Henrik Sedin have re-signed with the Vancouver Canucks. Daniel had 31 points last season, while Henrik recorded 39 points. The 22-year-old twins were selected second and third overall in the 1999 Entry Draft.

- Defensemen Brad Norton and Maxim Kuznetsov of the Los Angeles Kings.
