Canada has won every women's title since the world tournament began in 1990. The USA has finished second on every occasion.

Tournament Format
Teams were divided into three groups (A, B and C) for the preliminary round, and played a round-robin schedule of two games each. (See the bottom of this page for final preliminary round standings.)
For the second round, teams were divided into three new groups, based on preliminary round results:
- Group D consists of the top finishers in groups A, B and C.
- Group E consists of the second-place finishers.
- Group F consists of the third-place finishers.
The bronze medal game featured the third-place finisher from Group D and the first-place finisher from Group E. The gold medal game was contested between the the first and second-place finishers from Group D.
