February 21 -

To Colorado: Defenseman Kurt Sauer and a 2005 4th-round draft pick.
To Anaheim: Defenseman Martin Skoula.

  • The Avalanche apparently lost patience with Skoula and his many mistakes. He looked especially bad in this week's losses to Edmonton and Dallas. Sauer, 23, is more of a stay-at-home type. He'll likely play a limited role for now.
  • Skoula, 24, could yet mature into a top physical defenseman who can score. He'll get plenty of opportunity in Anaheim.

    February 20 -

    To Colorado: Defenseman Bob Boughner.
To Carolina: Defenseman Chris Bahen and a 2004 3rd-round draft pick.

  • Behind the top four of Blake, Foote, Morris and Skrastins, the Colorado defense is either suspect or inexperienced. Boughner, a nine-year veteran, can help, especially with Blake currently out with a leg fracture.
  • Carolina remade its defense last fall in hopes of vaulting back into the playoffs. Time to bail on that plan.

    February 19 -

To Philadelphia: Center Alexei Zhamnov and a 2004 4th-round draft pick.
To Chicago: Defenseman Jim Vandermeer, junior center Colin Fraser and a 2004 2nd-round draft pick.

  • Not a name that springs to mind when you think prototypical Flyer. But in desperate need of a quality centerman, Flyers' GM Bob Clarke adds Zhamnov without losing much from his current roster. Vandermeer is a good defenseman-in-progress, but he was in and out of the lineup. Philadelphia has two promising junior centers in Jeff Carter and Mike Richards, making Fraser, an emerging scorer, expendable.

  • Chicago makes a decent deal for a guy they had to trade. Zhamnov will be a free agent this summer, and talks to extend his contract with the Blackhawks had failed.

    February 18 -

    To Ottawa: Forward Peter Bondra
To Washington: Forward Brooks Laich and a 2005 2nd-round draft pick.

  • An assessment of the Bondra trade.

    February 16 -

    To Nashville: Forward Steve Sullivan
To Chicago: 2nd-round draft picks in 2004 and 2005.

  • Sullivan can help any team in need of a playoff push. He's a pint-sized worker who plays any forward position and scores in streaks.

    February 11 -

    To Toronto: Defenseman Drake Berehowsky
    To Pittsburgh: Defenseman Ric Jackman

  • The Maple Leafs exchange a part time young guy for a part time older guy. Berehowsky, 32, is more dependable than Jackman at this stage.
  • Jackman, 25, could not crack the Leafs' top six. But in Pittsburgh he might be an everyday defenseman.

    February 9 -

To St. Louis: Defenseman Eric Weinrich
To Philadelphia: 2004 5th-round draft pick

  • Even with several defensemen injured, the Flyers decided they had a surplus of bodies back there.
  • No surprise that the Blues would seek out a 37-year-old veteran. Their blue line is racked with injuries, contributing to the team's recent tailspin.

    To Phoenix: Center Mike Comrie
To Philadelphia: Goaltender Sean Burke, forward Branko Radivojevic, forward Ben Eager (Oshawa, OHL)

  • Burke, 37, has been outstanding over the last two years. He projects as a back-up for Robert Esche, and will play until Esche returns from a knee injury. Radivojevic, 23, is progressing nicely as a big, skilled forward; Eager, 20, is an unsigned left wing prospect.
  • With his speed and flair, Comrie could be the best player in the deal. He should flourish back in the Western Conference. The Coyotes need him to be their top center.
