March 4 -
To Phoenix: Goaltender Brent Johnson.
To St. Louis: Center Mike Sillinger.
After making a poor trade to get Sillinger last summer, the Coyotes flip him for a questionable goalie. Just what every team needs.
A two-way centerman can't save the Blues, but Sillinger won't hurt them.
To Boston: Center Mikael Nylander.
To Washington: A 2006 2nd-round draft pick and future considerations.
Boston needs a forward to fill out the top two lines. Nylander, an unrestricted free agent this summer, fits the bill. He might even catch fire in time for the playoffs.
The purge is almost complete in Washington.
To Montreal: Center Jim Dowd.
To Minnesota: A 2004 4th-round draft pick.
A sensible "depth deal." Dowd is small, aging, doesn't score. But he knows the game, especially in the defensive end.
The Wild, playoff hopes long gone, are clearing out the oldsters.
March 3 -
To Toronto: Defenseman Brian Leetch.
To New York Rangers: Defenseman Maxim Kondratiev, forward Jarkko Immonen, a 2004 1st-round draft pick and a 2005 2nd-round draft pick.
To Edmonton: Center Petr Nedved and and goaltender Jussi Markkanen.
To New York Rangers: Goaltender Stephen Valiquette, forward Dwight Helminen and a 2004 2nd-round draft pick.
The Rangers seek quantity in their current clearance sale. These two deals plus the Alexei Kovalev trade bring in five young players, and four picks. Whether it all pans out won't be known for many years.
The Leafs keep getting older. But Leetch remains an exceptional blueliner. Toronto needed help on defense, and as they did not give up their best young players or disrupt the roster, it's hard to find flaws in this deal. Leetch is under contract for next season and can probably play until he's 40.
Center is the Oilers weakest position, and injuries forced a move for a goalie. A bold trade by GM Kevin Lowe, but probably too late. Edmonton is six points out of a playoff spot with 16 games left.
March 3 (continued) -
To Boston: Defenseman Sergei Gonchar.
To Washington: Defenseman Shaone Morrisonn, a 2004 1st-round draft pick and a 2004 2nd-round draft pick.
An analysis of the Gonchar trade.
To San Jose: Defenseman Jason Marshall.
To Minnesota: A 2004 5th-round draft pick.
Marshall lost his job to younger players in Minnesota. The Sharks could use a little insurance behind their top four defensemen.
March 2 -
To Montreal: Right winger Alexei Kovalev.
To New York Rangers: Winger Josef Balej and a 2004 2nd-round draft pick.
An analysis of the Kovalev trade.
To Los Angeles: Defenseman Nathan Dempsey.
To Chicago: A 2005 4th-round draft pick and future considerations.
The Blackhawks continue to unload veterans. Dempsey is small by NHL standards, but he's a decent all-around defenseman who should help the Kings.
March 1 -
To New Jersey: Forward Viktor Kozlov.
To Florida: Winger Christian Berglund and defenseman Victor Uchevatov.
Scouting reports make Kozlov sound like a bigger Markus Naslund. He has never met expectations, partly because of injuries. But he's a useful forward.
Florida gets a couple of guys who might be NHL players. Berglund will be asked to score right away. Not a bad return for a veteran who supplies about 50 points a year when healthy.
February 27 -
To Detroit: Center Robert Lang.
To Washington: Junior center Tomas Fleischmann, a 2004 1st-round draft pick and a 2006 4th-round draft pick.
An analysis of the Lang trade.
February 25 -
To Colorado: Center Darby Hendrickson and a 2004 8th-round draft pick.
To Minnesota: A 2005 4th-round draft pick.
Hendrickson, a cog in the Wild machine last year, has spent much of this season in the minors. He can fill ice time in the absence of Andrei Nikolishin and Peter Forsberg.
2005 is expected to be a strong draft year, so Minnesota upgrades its position.
February 24 -
To Calgary: Forward Ville Nieminen
To Chicago: Center Jason Morgan and a conditional draft pick.
Nieminen doesn't score much, but he might provide capable defense on the third or fourth line.
The Blackhawks get a fringe player and a draft pick that is not likely to be very high.
February 22 -
To Pittsburgh: Right winger Landon Wilson
To Phoenix: Future considerations.
Wilson, a once promising forward, is trying to rebuild his game after a serious eye injury. The Penguins need help to break an 18-game losing streak.
The Coyotes, their playoff hopes ended, are paring the roster.
