NHL Daily Quick Fix: Weekend Wrap

Like so many NHL games lately, Sunday's meeting of the Colorado Avalanche and New Jersey Devils doesn't quite rev up until after the second intermission. Milan Hejduk and Eric Rasmussen exchange goals 1:13 apart during the second period; otherwise, the first 40 minutes are uneventful. But the teams trade plenty of chances in the third period and overtime before settling for a 1-1 draw. Other results from Friday through Sunday:

Sunday's Games:

  • For the second time in three games, the Boston Bruins let a lead slip away in the last two minutes. With the Phoenix net empty, Shane Doan scores his 9th of the season at 19:52 of the the third period, securing a 3-3 tie for the Coyotes.
  • The Dallas Stars lose the game. But did they also lose their captain? Mike Modano takes a stick in the face during the Stars 2-1 loss to Los Angeles. He does not return, and the injury is reported as a lacerated nose and eye contusion. Mike Cammalleri scores for the Kings, giving him three goals in two games.
  • Anaheim's Jean-Sebastian Giguere stops 25 shots in what his coach calls his best game of the season. The Mighty Ducks tie Minnesota 1-1. The Wild have one victory in their last eight games.
  • Trevor Kidd gives Toronto everything a team could ask of a backup goalie. Kidd makes 33 saves as the Maple Leafs defeat the Rangers 4-2. The Leafs have followed a five-game winless stretch with a five-game winning streak.
  • Also winning five in a row are the San Jose Sharks. The Sharks score a 2-1 victory over the Edmonton Oilers.

    Saturday's Games:

  • They made headlines with the best start in franchise history. But lately, the Tampa Bay Lightning can't score and can't win. Atlanta scores twice in third period to beat Tampa 2-1 and take over first place in the Southeast Division. The Lightning have scored five goals in their last five games.
  • Manny Legace is the goaltending star in Detroit, outplaying the injured Hasek and the unwanted Joseph. After last night's 2-1 win in St. Louis, Legace has allowed two goals in three games. Boyd Devereaux scores the winner for Detroit with less than three minutes left on the clock.
  • The Philadelphia Flyers wrap up the month of November without a loss. A 5-1 win against the Islanders extends Philadelphia's unbeaten streak to 12 games. The Islanders have lost five straight, scoring four goals during that stretch.
  • The Vancouver Canucks look vulnerable at the end of a four-game road trip. Vancouver squanders a 3-1 lead and needs a late goal from Brendan Morrison to secure a 4-4 tie in Calgary. Morrison records his first career hat trick.
  • Also picking up his first three-goal game is Vladimir Orszagh, as Nashville defeats Buffalo 4-1. The Predators have won four in a row.
  • Peter Bondra's 19th career hat trick leads Washington over Columbus 5-3. Robert Lang adds an assist, stretching his points streak to 15 games and tying Alex Tanguay at the top of the NHL scoring list. Marc Denis is pulled from the Columbus net after allowing four goals on five shots.
  • Radim Vrbata joins the hat trick brigade as well. Vrbatta doubles his goal total for the season by scoring three times in Carolina's 4-3 victory against Pittsburgh. It is the Hurricanes' first win in seven tries.
  • Maple Leafs 2-Senators 1/Kings 3-Blackhawks 1/Panthers 1-Canadiens 1.

    Friday's Games:

  • If there are any Red Wings on your fantasy league team, they should have been slotted into the top line this week. After Friday's 6-0 shutout of the New York Islanders, Detroit has scored 18 goals in its last three wins. Steve Thomas leads the way against the Islanders with two goals and an assist. Kris Draper's goal gives him 6 goals in his last 6 games. Manny Legace records the shuout.
  • St. Louis scores twice in the third period, rallying for a 2-2 tie and a hard-won point on the road in Tampa Bay.
  • The Buffalo Sabres do even better in their comeback against Florida. The Panthers take a 3-0 lead before Buffalo breaks the shutout in the dying minutes of the second period. The Sabres follow with three more goals in the third - two of them by Daniel Briere - to come away with a 4-3 victory.
  • The Devils' unbeaten streak has ended at 13 games with a 2-0 loss to Dallas. It is New Jersey's first loss since October 25th. The Stars have won four of their last five. Marty Turco has given up just six goals in his last five starts.
  • The Flyers' undefeated streak is still alive. Philadelphia makes it 11 games without a loss with a 4-2 win over Carolina. Kim Johnsson records 3 assists.
  • The Sharks and Wild are heading in opposite directions. A 2-1 victory against Minnesota makes it four straight wins for San Jose. The Wild have lost their last four.
  • Marc-Andre Fleury celebrates his 19th birthday with another loss. He allows four goals on 35 shots as the New York Rangers defeat Pittsburgh 4-1. With two goals and an assist, Martin Rucinsky of the Rangers now has 15 points in his last 12 games.
  • After a slow start to the season, Joe Sakic is on a pretty nice roll. Sakic picks up a pair of goals and an assist in Colorado's 4-1 defeat of Edmonton. The Avalanche captain has 15 points in his last 14 games. Colorado has only two regulation-time losses during that stretch.
  • Canadiens 5-Capitals 3/Mighty Ducks 4-Blackhawks 3/Predators 2-Bruins 1.
