NHL Daily Quick Fix: Gagne Has The Final Say In Canucks-Flyers Showdown

Among the NHL talking heads, there has lately been a campaign to pump up natural rivalries by introducing more divisional games into the schedule: Boston-Montreal or Detroit-St. Louis is always a better draw than San Jose-Ottawa. But cross-continent games provide the most anticipated matchups of any season, lining up the best in the East against the best in the West, as happened in Philadelphia on Thursday night.
  • The Canucks have to be happy to get out of Philadelphia with a point, after Todd Bertuzzi tied the game with 8 seconds left. But Simon Gagne salvaged the 4-3 overtime win for Philadelphia, on a play set up when Sami Kapanen snagged a costly Vancouver turnover. The result leaves the Flyers on top of the East with 22 points. Vancouver leads the West with 23.
  • The Blue Jackets grabbed an early 2-0 lead in Ottawa, which lasted until they started taking penalties. The Senators scored five power play goals to come back and beat Columbus 5-2. Marian Hossa had two goals and two assists.
  • The precipitous slump continues for Atlanta with a 5-1 loss to Carolina.
  • New Jersey is unbeaten in eight games after a 3-1 win over Florida.
  • Edmonton wraps up a strong six-game road trip with a 2-0 win in Minnesota.
  • Center Jason Weimer, placed on waivers by the New York Islanders, was claimed by Minnesota today. But the Islanders responded with a 3-1 win against Montreal.
  • Predators 4-Flames 1.
