If the Ilya Kovalchuk saga makes your eyes glaze over, maybe what you need is an evening with Dean Youngblood.
With the real game in hibernation, it's a perfect time to check out hockey on the silver screen:
- Our list of the All-Time Greatest Hockey Movies was revised a few years back to include a fine drama on the life of Rocket Richard.
- Given the language and habits of pro athletes, not all sports films are suitable for children. So if you're looking to entertain a young fan consider our pick of Hockey Movies for Kids.
- Finally, true lovers of puck film will want to be on the lookout for the Great Lost Hockey Movies.
It's a collection starring the likes of Spinner Spencer, Jumbo Mullins, Derek Sanderson, gamblers and wiseguys, dope-smoking artsies and Gabby Dugan in the penalty cage
Even Neil Young's dad gets in on the fun. As far as I know, none of the lost movies are available on video or DVD.

Jamie — I’m pretty sure Youngblood is about Junior hockey, not the pro game.
Thanks, BBO. I’ve made the correction.
Had a chance to reconsider Youngblood when I saw a chunk of it a couple of years ago. I have to admit there is some charm in its awfulness. And the nude scene surely makes it a hit with many would-be Youngbloods.
Don’t forger the Slapshot, the all time greates hockey movie. Ok, maybe it’s not about the game so much and there isn’t a Stanley Cup winning ceremony, but it really shows the other site of the hockey world.
