Does Canada Have a Goalie for 2010?
Not an encouraging week for Steve Yzerman, the man who will build Team Canada for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.
Based on recent results in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, his goaltending options are looking suspect.
I've written here and here about the questions surrounding Martin Brodeur. After another poor playoff, there's a growing consensus that Brodeur's best days are behind him.
That leaves the heir apparent, Roberto Luongo, 30 years old and in his prime.
Luongo's reputation has yet to translate into NHL success. But in Vancouver he's seen as the savior, the man who raises a solid team to Cup-contender status.
A contender that can't hold a lead, as it turns out.
The Canucks beat Chicago on Thursday, despite squandering a 3-0 advantage in the third period.
Saturday night was a debacle, with Vancouver up 2-0 before Luongo was shelled for five goals.
You can't hang it all on the goalie. The team came unraveled in front of him.
But Luongo doesn't emerge from the week looking like Mr. Shutdown, does he? More like Mr. Ordinary.
There's plenty of time for the story to change and for Luongo to emerge the hero.
Steve Yzerman and Hockey Canada are counting on it, because there aren't many convincing contenders for the Olympic goaltending job.
Marty Turco is reportedly on the trading block after another up-and-down season in Dallas.
J.S. Giguere is a $6 million back-up in Anaheim.
Cam Ward was in net when Canada blew a two-goal lead with just 12 minutes left in the gold medal game at the 2008 World Championship.
Marc-Andre Fleury, anyone? Chris Osgood?
