2008-09 NHL Season Preview

Monday September 29, 2008

As fans in Prague and Stockholm prepare to ring in the new NHL season, it's time to speculate on how the next six months might unfold.

This week, we preview the coming season with a profile of each NHL team.

The 30 team previews will be rolled out as the week goes on, starting today with five teams that made the Stanley Cup Playoffs last spring and five that closed shop at the end of the regular season.

On Saturday, when the list is complete, we'll post the predicted NHL standings for 2008-09.

NHL Team Previews, Part One:

  • Anaheim Ducks
Unless they find extra offense, a slip from the league's elite is inevitable.
  • Boston Bruins
No team better illustrates the Eastern Conference tightrope walk.
  • Chicago Blackhawks
A couple of the kids are bound to disappoint and take a step backwards.
  • Dallas Stars
The real question is at center ice.
  • Nashville Predators
More focus on defense is Nashville's only option.
  • New York Islanders
The forwards don't look any better than last year's anemic bunch.
  • Phoenix Coyotes
An imporved team. But the rest of the West is getting better too.
  • Tampa Bay Lightning
They’re going to take over the world! Or so they would have us believe.
  • Vancouver Canucks
It looks like a less than stellar debut for new GM Mike Gillis.
  • San Jose Sharks
If the coach can get them all firing at once, it’s a formidable attack.
