Farewell, Reggie Dunlop

By September 28, 2008

Follow me on:

Hollywood aficionados think first of his award-winning roles in classics like Hud, Cool Hand Luke, and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

But for hockey fans, Paul Newman will always be Reggie Dunlop, coach and chief reprobate of the Charlestown Chiefs.

Slap Shot, with Newman in the starring role, still ranks as the filthiest, funniest, most irreverant and - at moments - most authentic sports movie ever made.

The film made cult heroes of the bespectacled Hanson Brothers and produced a few classic hockey quotes. But Newman's performance held the movie together.

Reg Dunlop, aging leader of a small-town, rust-belt team littered with goons, drunks, and dead-end hockey bums, lives on as an icon of the game.

No matter what role Newman played, he gave every movie he was in a touch of class as expected of one of the all-time great actors. Actor, humanitarian, husband, father and even role model – Paul Newman did them all well.

    Rest in peace, Paul.
