Jonathan Roy: Head Case of the Year

Hockey’s newest YouTube star is Patrick Roy’s boy, who flaunted his anger-management issues during a Quebec junior league game last weekend.

But while Jonathan Roy is a poster boy for rink rage, he’s ashamed of himself for making rude gestures to the crowd:

"I want to take this opportunity to apologize for my comments and gestures toward Chicoutimi hockey fans as well as people who saw me and heard me on television. You will never see me behave like that again."

Conspicuously absent from the words of contrition, however, was Chicoutimi goaltender Bobby Nadeau, who can be seen in video footage getting repeatedly punched by Roy even after falling to the ice.

Roy’s team, the Quebec Remparts, was bombed 10-1 in the game. The season stats suggest Jonathan is not much of a goalie, and probably wouldn’t be in the league if his dad didn’t own and coach the team.

On the plus side, he has a bright future in assault and battery.

Suspensions will be announced Tuesday, and many will be watching to see if dad shares the blame for letting the Remparts run wild. Around the Q, Patrick Roy isn’t exactly regarded as a class act. It’s also believed that league officials are intimidated by his Hall of Fame credentials and legendary status.

Update, March 25/08 - The coaching legend took a hit. But the thug goalie got off easy:

The Quebec hockey icon once revered as St. Patrick is losing his halo.

In the latest smudge on Patrick Roy's résumé, the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League has suspended the Québec Remparts coach for five games for his part in Saturday's ugly brawl involving his son.

Jonathan Roy, Patrick's 19-year-old son and the Remparts' backup goalie, was hit with a seven-game suspension for skating the length of the ice to pummel Chicoutimi Saguenéens goalie Bobby Nadeau, who did not fight back.
