Jonathan Roy: Head Case of the Year

Monday March 24, 2008

Hockey’s newest YouTube star is Patrick Roy’s boy, who flaunted his anger-management issues during a Quebec junior league game last weekend.

But while Jonathan Roy is a poster boy for rink rage, he’s ashamed of himself for making rude gestures to the crowd:

"I want to take this opportunity to apologize for my comments and gestures toward Chicoutimi hockey fans as well as people who saw me and heard me on television. You will never see me behave like that again."

Conspicuously absent from the words of contrition, however, was Chicoutimi goaltender Bobby Nadeau, who can be seen in video footage getting repeatedly punched by Roy even after falling to the ice.

Roy’s team, the Quebec Remparts, was bombed 10-1 in the game. The season stats suggest Jonathan is not much of a goalie, and probably wouldn’t be in the league if his dad didn’t own and coach the team.

On the plus side, he has a bright future in assault and battery.

Suspensions will be announced Tuesday, and many will be watching to see if dad shares the blame for letting the Remparts run wild. Around the Q, Patrick Roy isn’t exactly regarded as a class act. It’s also believed that league officials are intimidated by his Hall of Fame credentials and legendary status.

Update, March 25/08 - The coaching legend took a hit. But the thug goalie got off easy:

The Quebec hockey icon once revered as St. Patrick is losing his halo.

In the latest smudge on Patrick Roy's résumé, the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League has suspended the Québec Remparts coach for five games for his part in Saturday's ugly brawl involving his son.

Jonathan Roy, Patrick's 19-year-old son and the Remparts' backup goalie, was hit with a seven-game suspension for skating the length of the ice to pummel Chicoutimi Saguenéens goalie Bobby Nadeau, who did not fight back.

They both should be out of the league with no questions asked. Two big pieces of sh**.

Patrick Roy and his goon son area disgrace to hockey. Their actions were awful. As I player and a coach of youth hockey, what kind of message does that send. Its one thing to defend a fellow teammate, but to skate the length of the ice and start beating on a guy who obviously was doing the RIGHT thing by staying out of it, is just outragous. I personally believe Jonathan should be banned for the rest of the year and part of next year. And same goes for is goon father/coach.

he is young ans shows much of his dad with his attitude. But he is the backup right now and was put into the game after the starter let in five goals in twelve shots.

As much as I love Patrick Roy, I really wonder where his head is these days…..and I worry that he is tainting his reputation. I think the 5 games he got was fair, it’s in line with other coach suspensions for not contriolling their team, however, attacking a kid who played by the rules and stayed in his own crease is inexcusable, Jonathon should have been suspended for the rest of the playoffs and for at LEAST 10 games next year….the 7 games really doesnt send a message.

Jonathan’s actions are understandable. Its hard to follow in the footsteps of such an iconic goaltender but when you lack the talent like he, no doubt, does you have to make a name for youself anyway possible. His dad became extremely arrogant in his last years having pretty much conquered it all, began fighting as well. Maybe this is Jonathan’s attempt at telling the hockey world and scouts included that “I’m just like my dad!” And what’s up with all the refs just standing around watching?

Each time I watch the video of this incident it makes me angrier. I love hockey, but I hate this. I am not against fighting in hockey. I am one who agrees that it is part of the game. But what Jonathan Roy did had nothing to do with hockey. Other people here have mentioned Patrick’s willingness to drop the gloves and fight, but I don’t think Patrick ever faught anyone who didn’t fight back. Jonathan Roy pulled the mask off of and repeated punched a guy who was down and never dropped his gloves. If I did that to someone on the street, I’d be arrested. And so should be Jonathan Roy. It may be hardline, but I honestly feel like Jonathan Roy committed the crime of assault. The seven game suspension was ridiculous. I sincerely hope that Jonathan Roy has still a higher price to pay through the Quebec justice system.

Patrick Wa-Wa has never had the class that people want to take away from him. What the league should do is threaten to send Mike Vernon OR Chris Osgood up there to kick his a$$ AGAIN. As for his son, I agree with the previous poster about him making a name for himself anyway he can. Hopefully the Roy family will be like a bad cold and just go away.

i dont know what the f*** all you idiots are thinking PATRICK ROY is the GREATEST goalie of all time and could kick the s*** out of anyone and didnt take s*** from anyone and that brawl was know different than an AVS wings brawl i mean what was Roy supposed to do walk on the ice and go to each of his players and tell them no no i mean come on people and the whole goalie fight wouldnt have been so bad if that kid would have fought back in my opinion the only thing that jonathan did wrong was flipping off the crowd and he should have given that other goalie a chance to fight back if he would have done that then i would call that fair all in all PATRICK ROY is the best there ever was and anyone who thinks different is a complete idiot and can shove it!

First of all Colton, take a G.U.M class (Grammar Usage and Mechanics). Second, fighting is NOT part of hockey. Nowhere in the history or description of hockey does it mention anything about fighting. Fighting is merely how player relieves frustration and stress on the ice when they are getting their asses kicked through and through. This fight is a prime example of that. Also, Roy and his dad need both their asses kicked for they did. Roy antagonized his son to do what he did but of course would never admit to it, nor would his son admit to it. It was a pathetic, unnecessary fight that should lead to assault and battery charges of some sort. I would love to play against Roy’s son and score on his pathetic ass all day! You do not have a valid arguement here fool so don’t kid yourself by thinking that Patrick is the best goalie ever because skill also comes with class off the ice, which he proved he doesn’t have!
