30 Years On, the Bruins Remain Adrift
Nobody was surprised when the Boston Bruins fired their general manager on Saturday. As one writer points out, Boston has essentially "been rendered an expansion franchise" under Mike O'Connell.
But changing general managers is merely a cosmetic move. The bad news for Bruins' fans is that owner Jeremy Jacobs remains the team's dominant personality and decision maker. Working under Jacobs - whose meddlesome, cheapskate ways have defined the team since he bought it 31 years ago - almost anyone would come off looking like the worst general manager in hockey.
