Sweden's Queen-Sized Effort Sinks Team USA

Friday February 17, 2006

Sweden will play for Olympic gold after pulling off the biggest upset in the history of women's hockey.

The Swedes have defeated the United States in a shootout to advance to the Olympic final. For the first time since women's international hockey began, the championship final will not be a USA-Canada showdown.

The new hockey hero of Tre Kroner is 19-year-old goaltender Kim Martin, who stopped 37 of 39 shots and all four shootout attempts. The American goalie, Chanda Gunn, made 15 saves but allowed two goals on three shots in the second period. Sweden outscored the U.S. 2-0 in the shootout.

The Swedish women fell behind 2-0 early in the second period, and had penalty trouble all day. The Americans failed to score on two 5-on-3 advantages, and on a late overtime power play.

Sweden plays either Canada or Finland for the gold medal. Team USA advances to the bronze medal game. Both games will be played Monday.

"We knew this day was coming at some point," said U.S. forward Kristin King.

  • Postscript: No doubt the knives will be out for U.S. coach Ben Smith, who was already taking flak for this extremely unpopular move last summer.
