The Hair Club for Goalies
Montreal Canadiens' goaltender Jose Theodore has failed a drug test. No surprise, really. His suspiciously full head of hair was a dead giveaway:
"Theodore tested positive for the hair restoration drug, Propecia, which is not an anabolic steroid but does act as a masking agent," reports TSN.ca.
The team physician, Dr. David Mulder, says Thedore has been taking it for "eight to nine years... on the advice of a dermatologist. And he has had very good success and he feels it has helped hair growth and prevented further loss and he has taken it with my knowledge."
Propecia has not given Theodore an edge over his more sparsely thatched opponents. Anyone watching him play this year can attest to that. His ugly numbers - a 3.46 goals-against average and .881 save percentage - don't exactly scream "performance enhancement" either.
The test result would only affect his eligibility for international hockey. It has no bearing on his status in the NHL. Theodore is reportedly appealing the result.
