Details and Denials in the Tocchet Gambling Case
Wednesday February 8, 2006
Rick Tocchet's lawyer has released a statement: "The allegation that Rick Tocchet financed an illegal gambling operation involving organized crime figures is categorically false and irresponsible..."
New Jersey police have released further details of their case. In this report, Tocchet is described as "the money man, overseeing the operation, collecting the ring's winnings and covering its losses."
As of Wednesday night, Tocchet has been granted "an indefinite leave of absence" by the NHL. The Associated Press reports that Tocchet "must immediately cease all contact and communication with all NHL and team personnel and stay away for the duration of his leave. He will not be allowed to return without (commissioner Gary) Bettman's consent."
Meanwhile, the NHL has hired former federal prosecutor Robert Cleary to lead its internal investigation. Cleary was the lead prosecutor in the case against "the Unabomber," Theodore Kaczynski.
