Time for the Next Hockey Nickname

Sunday December 18, 2005

The Next One has arrived. But if you think he's great, just wait until you see the Next One. Then there's the Next One; most folks don't know about him yet. And remember that guy they called the Next One? Too bad he never quite lived up to billing.

Such is the sorry state of the hockey nickname in 2005. Starved of imagination, sports writers recycle the same old label every time some 14-year-old scores a hat trick.

To review:

  • The "Next One" tag gained currency as reporters searched for a larger-than-life hero to succeed "The Great One," Wayne Gretzky.
  • The first Next One was Eric Lindros. He disappointed, and has since passed the torch to...
  • Sidney Crosby, a true Next One if there ever was one. Although he's already forced to share with...
  • Phil Kessel. He isn't even old enough to drink, but some are already tired of him and have turned to...
  • 16-year-old Angelo Esposito.

It's all a bit much, and a bit confusing. We humbly suggest a few alternatives for the next fuzzy-cheeked phenom: The Other One; The Very Good One; The Better Than Most Guys His Age One; The Kid Who Had That Decent Game The Other Night One.
