Brett Hull's Final One-Timer

Saturday October 15, 2005

The revamped, faster NHL has its first casualty.

Brett Hull has retired. "The mind is willing but the body isn't," he explained in a press conference Saturday.

Hull's 20th NHL season will be his shortest. He retires after recording one assist in five games with the Phoenix Coyotes. At the age of 41, he was said to be out of shape at training camp, a notion supported by reports that one long shift during an exhibition game left him on his hands and knees trying to recover. It "would not be difficult to be home right now," he told a reporter that night.

Hull finishes third on the NHL's career goals list with 741, and fourth on the playoff list with 103 Stanley Cup goals.
