The Next Great American Hockey Player?
It's a little early for comparisons to Brett Hull, Mike Modano and Pat Lafontaine. But such are the names mentioned by those who see Phil Kessel grab the puck and charge for the net.
Kessel, a 17-year-old forward from Madison, Wisconsin, led the United Staes to the World Under-18 Hockey Championship on Sunday. The U.S. scored a 5-1 win over Canada, finishing the tournament undefeated.
It was one of the most convincing performances ever by an American team in a world championship. But the real story was Kessel, whose speed and skill set him apart from other players his age. He was named the tournament's outstanding forward after ringing up nine goals and seven assists in six games. But the numbers can't convey his electrifying presence: something exciting seems to happen every time Kessel touches the puck.
The story will surely pick up steam next season, when Kessel arrives at the University of the Minnesota. He is already projected as the top pick in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.
