A New Bourque for Boston
Boston University has prevailed in one of hockey's great local rivalries. With last night's 3-2 overtime win against Northeastern, the Terriers won the coveted Beanpot.
Completing the perfect picture for local fans, the winning goal came from the son of legendary Bruins' defenseman Ray Bourque.
"One of the main reasons I attended BU was to play in the Beanpot for a good school that has success in it," said Chris Bourque. "I'm pretty sure that I attended every Beanpot tournament or watched it on television since I was a little kid. It is exciting and I like being part of it."
Picked by Washington in the second round of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, Bourque is smaller than his father and plays forward rather than defense. Hobbled by a knee injury suffered at the recent World Junior Championship, he has seven goals and 17 points in 24 games as a BU freshman.
His future in pro hockey will likely come down to a size issue. At the age of 19, Chris Bourque is listed as 5-foot-9, 178 pounds. That won't win him any favours in the NHL, where teams would rather trust a 6-3, 200-pounder with slow feet and no hands.
