Last-Ditch NHL Talks Flounder, Bettman and Goodenow Share the Blame
Eric Duhatschek of the Toronto Globe and Mail has it right: Gary Bettman's obligation is now clear. The NHL commissioner must cancel the season as soon as possible. To leave the matter hanging any longer demonstrates contempt for hockey fans.
Once that's done, both Bettman and NHLPA head Bob Goodenow should resign. It's their job to reach a collective bargaining agreement, and they have failed miserably. For either of them to stay on demonstrates contempt for the game.
But don't expect those resignations any time soon. Contempt for the game and contempt for the fans will be the legacy of both men, and of the NHL in 2005.
The NHL and NHL Players' Association broke off talks Friday afternoon, failing yet again to make the slightest dent in the 142-day league lockout.
"There's really no progress to report of any type," said Goodenow. "That's the reality."
Incredibly, both sides remain entrenched in positions they staked out months ago. The negotiating incompetence and lack of creativity is stunning.
