John Kerry? He's a Right Winger, Actually

Wednesday November 3, 2004

America could have had its first Rink Rat in Chief, but opted instead for another four years of George W. Bush.

Ben McGrath of the New Yorker magazine says John Kerry was the first hockey-playing Presidential candidate since Eugene McCarthy. His career peaked in prep school, where he played forward on the varsity team in his senior year. “He was tall, rangy, like some sort of big eagle—kind of swoopy,” says one former team mate.

Senator Kerry lugged his hockey gear along the campaign trail, squeezing in a few games of shinny. But the hockey vote was not enough to put him over the top. "Hockey is not a red-state sport," noted McGrath. "And Canadians can’t vote."
