NHL Collective Bargaining: The Gulf Widens

The NHL Players' Association made a proposal to the league today. But as that proposal did not include a salary cap, it went nowhere.

That's about all you need to know about the latest negotiations on a new NHL collective bargaining agreement. The current CBA expires on Wednesday, after which the owners will lock out the players. Training camps will not begin on time and it's a good bet that there will be no NHL hockey until the new year, at the earliest.

If you want more details, TSN.ca provides a good roundup of the disagreements, accusations and finger-pointing that followed today's meeting. Essentially, the players' proposal included a system of luxury taxes and revenue sharing among teams. It does not come close to meeting the NHL's desired goal of "cost certainty."
