Monday July 5, 2004
Looking for more flow, and maybe more offense, at the hockey game? Try watching the American Hockey League next season. The AHL, which is often used by the NHL to test-drives rule changes and other new ideas, has approved several major changes for 2004-05.
Tie games will be settled by a shootout.
For seven weeks, the league will test a rule limiting puck-handling by goaltenders.
Goalie leg pads will be reduced in size.
No-touch icing will be called.
The "tag-up" rule will apply on offsides.
The blue lines and red line will be widened to 24 inches.
Goal lines and blue lines will move closer to the end boards.
