Suspect Goal Sets Up Canada-Sweden Gold Medal Rematch

Saturday May 8, 2004
Canada will defend its title tomorrow in the Gold Medal Game at the 2004 World Hockey Championship. Sweden is back in the final as well, looking to atone for last year's second-place finish.

Sweden defeated the United States 3-1 in today's semifinals. The other semifinal result was more controversial, as the Canadians beat Solvakia 2-1 on a disputed goal.

With the game tied 1-1 in the third period, Slovak goalie Jan Lasak went behind the net to clear a loose puck. Canadian center Rob Niedermayer followed. Niedermayer's stick blade hit the back of Lasak's leg; the goalie stumbled, and by the time he got back in the net a shot was on its way. Lasak made the first stop, but was in no position to handle the rebound, which was pushed in by Shawn Horcoff.

Replays suggested the contact behind the net was incidental. But in an NHL game, Niedermayer would have been called for goaltender interference.

The Slovaks had several chances to tie the game. They were handed three straight power plays in the final 14 minutes, and outshot the Canadians 16-5 in the third period. But only a couple of saves made by Canadian goaltender Roberto Luongo looked difficult.

Meanwhile, Sweden jumped out to an early lead against the US, as Samuel Pahlsson scored 18 seconds in. Jonas Hoglund's power play goal late in the first period made it 2-0, and the Americans were unable to climb back.

Canada defeated Sweden in overtime to win the 2003 world championship.

Slovakia and the United States will play for the bronze medal.
