Stanley Cup Digest: Red Wings Roasted; Sakic Does It Again

From Jamie Fitzpatrick, About.com GuideMay 2, 2004

Follow me on:

The Detroit Red Wings did not anticipate so much aggravation from the bottom half of the standings. The Nashville Predators made them look bad for a couple of games in round one. Now the Calgary Flames have Detroit on the ropes. Goaltender Miikka Kirpusoff deserves much of the credit, but he isn't the whole story, as the Flames outwork and outsmart the Red Wings in a 1-0 win on Saturday. Detroit has more firepower, to be sure. But the Flames are organized and composed, full value for their 3-2 series lead.

Also on Saturday:

  • Maybe we should start calling him Overtime Joe. Sakic comes to the rescue again, scoring twice as Colorado spoils the party with a 2-1 OT win in San Jose. The Avalanche are alive for another day, down 3-2 in the series.
