NHL Daily: Crowded At The Summit

Thursday December 18, 2003
Detroit is the first NHL team to score 100 goals this season; Curtis Joseph has four wins in five games; and another victory-from-the-jaws-of-defeat performance lifts the Red Wings into a three-way tie with Toronto and Philadelphia for first place overall. Read on for Wednesday's scores, fantasy hockey updates, injury news, the latest from around the NHL and more.

The Score:

  • Red Wings 3-Sharks 2 (OT): It wouldn’t be a Detroit game without a little show by Brett Hull and Pavel Datsyuk. Hull feeds Datsyuk for the tying goal with 26 seconds left; Brendan Shanahan finishes the job in overtime.
  • Stars 3-Canucks 1: Dallas scores more than one goal for the first time in eight games.
  • Capitals 2-Panthers 2: Jagr sits out with a broken thumbnail. Maxime Ouellet has another decent game for the Caps, with 20 saves.
  • Wild 3-Avalanche 2: Joe Sakic’s two goals and assorted dangerous shifts are not enough for the Avs.

Fantasy Hockey Whiz: Henrik Zetterberg, returning from 21 games off with a broken leg, bags a goal and two assists for Detroit.

Fantasy Hockey Dog: Henrik Sedin is a healthy scratch for the Canucks’ game in Dallas. His brother isn’t doing anything either.

Rumor Du Jour: Barry Melrose at ESPN says an Eric Lindros-Jaromir Jagr trade makes sense in an our-problem-for-your-problem kind of way. The Rangers can afford Jagr’s long-term deal; Lindros’ contract expires after this season, which suits the suddenly parsimonious Capitals.

Lame: The Devils’ Jamie Langenbrunner, who underwent knee surgery November 29, has reportedly had his return pushed back to early-mid January.

Streaking: Vancouver has piled up points by winning in overtime. But it has now been nine games since they finished an opponent in 60 minutes.

    Play-By-Play:

  • The Philadelphia Flyers trade forward Eric Chouinard to the Minnesota Wild for a fifth-round pick in the 2004 NHL entry draft.
  • Defenseman Teppo Numminen and right wing Aaron Downey return to the Dallas Stars after lengthy injury layoffs. But the Stars place backup goalie Ron Tugnutt on injured reserve with a knee sprain.
  • Vancouver backup goaltender Johan Hedberg will miss at least 10 days with a fractured left hand.
  • Vaclav Varada of the Ottawa Senators is out at least four weeks with a left knee injury.
