NHL Daily Quick Fix: Caps Score For New Guy

Friday December 12, 2003
If you wanted goals on Thursday, the place to be was Washington. A coaching change did little to improve the Capitals' dreadful defense. But the Washington forwards give new coach Glen Hanlon their stamp of approval by chalking up half a dozen goals in a 6-5 win over Boston. Eleven players score in the game. Like several other teams that started the season well, Boston has fallen into a lengthy slump, with one win in 10 games. Also on Thursday:
  • Washington can't stop 'em. Tampa Bay can't score 'em. The Lightning are on a slide because they don't get enough goals. Thursday's 3-2 loss to Ottawa is the latest example.
  • Minnesota can't score either. It's big headlines if the Wild manage more than one goal in a game. They don't make headlines on this night, losing 1-0 to Toronto on Ed Belfour's third shutout and the Maple Leafs' eighth straight road win.
  • Carolina can't score either (Anyone noticing a pattern here?). Kevin Weekes stops 30 shots, but Shean Donovan's goal gives Calgary a 1-0 win over the Hurricanes. Donovan has scored the game-winner in four of Calgary's last five victories.
  • The goalie of the night is Colorado's David Aebischer. He makes 37 saves - the Avalanche are outshot 20-6 in the third period - earning Colorado a 1-1 tie in Vancouver. Defensemen do the scoring: Ed Jovanovski for the Canucks and Rob Blake for the Avalanche.
  • A busy finish in Chicago, where Brendan Shanahan ties it for Detroit with 1:08 left, and Mark Bell replies for the Blackhawks 15 seconds into overtime. Chicago wins 4-3, ending a huge 14-game winless streak.
  • Kings 4-Predators 1/Oilers 2-Sharks 2.
