NHL Daily Quick Fix: Flyers Hit A Familiar Wall

Tuesday December 2, 2003
The most telling detail of Philadelphia's 12-game unbeaten streak is the pair games that bookend it. On October 12, the Flyers lost 3-2 to New Jersey. They were not beaten again until December 1, going down 4-1 in Ottawa.

So for all their success, the Flyers still can't get over the hump against the two teams that always stand in their way come playoff time: the Devils and Senators.

Martin Havlat scores twice for Ottawa on Monday, both goals coming off bank shots; the first one hit a Flyers' defenseman and the second caromed in off Philadelphia goalie Robert Esche. Senators' goalie Martin Prusek makes 31 saves.

  • In Monday's only other game, Pittsburgh defeats Atlanta 4-3, with Ramzi Abid and Dick Tarnstrom each collecting a goal and an assist. Ilya Kovalchuk scores one of the Atlanta goals, boosting his league-leading total to 18. The win moves the Penguins ahead of the Washington Capitals, who now have the NHL's worst record.
