NHL Daily Quick Fix: Kono Stealing The Spotlight in Denver

Friday November 21, 2003
Forget Selanne and Kariya. Steve Konowalchuk, recently arrived from Washington, is looking like the steal of the year for the Colorado Avalanche. Colorado flirts with disaster on Thursday, giving up a 2-0 lead. But Konowalchuk's second goal of the game restores the lead, and the Avalanche defeat the New York Rangers 4-3. Konowalchuk has seven goals in his last eight games. Elsewhere on Thursday:

  • Boston's trio of Joe Thornton, Glen Murray and Mike Knuble rivals the top lines in Colorado and Philadelphia as the best in the NHL right now. Knuble has a goal and an assist, and Murray scores his fourth in as many games, to help Boston defeat Washington 4-3.
  • Cory Stillman is proving to be another of this season's great acquisitions. The Blue-turned-Lightning scores his 10th of the season to lift Tampa Bay over the Islanders 3-2.
  • The Ottawa Senators - likely tired of reading "What's Wrong With The Sens?" every time they pick up a newspaper - take out their frustrations on the Carolina Hurricanes. The Senators score five goals on 17 second-period shots to seal a 6-1 victory. It is Ottawa's third win in ten games.
  • Marc Denis stops 25 shots for his second shutout of the season, as Columbus beats Detroit 3-0.
  • Montreal coach Claude Julien fails to get his best faceoff man on the ice, and pays the price. With Yanic Perrault watching from the Canadiens' bench, Craig Conroy wins the draw and Martin Gelinas scores the winner with 74 seconds left, giving Calgary a 2-1 win against Montreal.
  • Canucks 3-Blackhawks 2 (OT)/Oilers 3-Maple Leafs 2/Flyers 3-Wild 1.
