NHL Daily Quick Fix: Bruins, Blues and Stars Blow Big Leads

Thursday November 20, 2003
The game of the night is in Atlanta, where Boston cannot shake the Thrashers. The Bruins jump out to a 2-0 lead, and squander it. They go ahead 3-2, then 4-3, but can't make a lead stick against a persistent Altanta team. The game ends up in overtime, where Ilya Kovalchuk scores his league-leading 14th goal to steal a 5-4 win for the Thrashers. In other Wednesday games:
  • St. Louis rolls up a 3-1 advantage on Phoenix. But the Coyotes are making their share of comebacks this season. With less than two minutes remaining in the third period, Brian Savage scores his second goal of the night to secure a 5-4 Phoenix victory.
  • Even a tie feels like a loss for the beleaguered Dallas Stars. The Stars take a confident 3-1 lead against Anaheim. But the game slips away and ends in a 3-3 tie, with Andy MacDonald scoring the final goal for Anaheim on a shot from center ice. Marty Turco is a long, long way from the goaltender he was last season.
  • Is Marc-Andre Fleury starting to wilt under the constant assault? The teenaged goaltending sensation lasts 20 minutes, allowing 3 goals on 9 shots, as Pittsburgh loses 6-2 to Minnesota. Does it make any sense for a terrible defensive team to throw its goaltending prodigy to the wolves, night after night?
  • Manny Legace takes over for the groin-challenged Dominik Hasek in Detroit, leading the Red Wings to a 5-1 win against Columbus. Brett Hull scores a pair.
  • Kings 3-Predators 0/Devils 4-Sabres 1/Islanders 4-Panthers 1.
