NHL Daily Quick Fix: Senators Cave, Oates An Oiler

Tuesday November 18, 2003
The slumping Ottawa Senators have just two wins in their last nine games after Monday's lacklustre effort against Buffalo.

The Sabres played a perfect Eastern Conference road game, keeping the excitement to a minimum and scoring a couple of quick ones to eke out a 2-1 victory.

The Senators played along by sleepwalking through much of the evening, coming to life only after Jean-Pierre Dumont and James Patrick scored 14 seconds apart in the third period.

Ottawa responded with a power play goal by Wade Redden, but rarely looked dangerous during the rest of the game. The Senators have not scored an even strength goal in their last three games.

Meanwhile, Adam Oates is bringing his 41-year-old hands to Edmonton. The free agent center has signed a one-year contract with the Oilers, reportedly worth $1.95-million. Oates is an 18-year NHL veteran with 1,402 points, including 1,063 assists, in 1,277 career games. With Marty Reasoner gone for at least a month with leg injuries and Mike Comrie still on the sidelines in a contract dispute, Edmonton has found itself thin a center.
