NHL Daily Quick Fix: The Weekend Wrap

Monday November 17, 2003
Should a hockey team be rewarded for losing? The Vancouver Canucks, the best team in the Western Conference, could not handle the best in the East this week. The Canucks followed Thursday's loss to Philadelphia with a 2-1 loss in Boston on Saturday. But both games went into overtime, so Vancouver comes away with two points. A pair of points for a pair of losses; that's today's NHL. In the rest of the weekend games:

Sunday:

  • The Rangers give up a ton of shots, again, and are useless on the power play, again, but manage a 2-2 tie in Chicago.
  • The Mighty Ducks crawl back to.500 with a 4-3 win over St. Louis. Steve Rucchin scores his 7th and 8th goals of the season.
  • The Atlanta Thrashers sacrifice a 2-0 lead, but recover to defeat Florida 5-2.
  • The Phoenix Coyotes cough up a 2-0 lead as well. Andrew Cassels scores with 42 seconds left to earn Columbus a 2-2 tie. Cassels has just two goals this year. Ladislav Nagy of the Coyotes scores his 10th.

Saturday:

  • Toronto coughs up a 2-0 lead in the third period, settling for a 2-2 tie in San Jose.
  • How bad is Paul Kariya's wrist problem? In his second game back from a long layoff, he re-aggravates the injury and does not return. Kariya's Colorado teammates cruise to a 3-0 win over the miserable Dallas Stars.
  • Jose Theodore turns in his best game of the year. Montreal is outshot 40-13 by Ottawa, but the Canadiens win 3-2.
  • Which New York Rangers will show up on any given day? The ugly Rangers showed up in New Jersey, squashed 5-0 by the Devils. A three-point game for Scott Niedermayer, and the Devils are unbeaten in nine.
  • Give the L.A. Kings credit. They are in almost every game they play. But Pavol Demitra's goal is enough for the St. Louis Blues, who beat Los Angeles 1-0.
  • The Red Wings earn five out of six points from a three-game road trip, after a 1-1 tie in Minnesota.
  • Philadelphia breaks open a scoreless tie in the third period, throttling Atlanta 4-0. Jeff Hackett gets his third shutout.
  • Capitals 2-Hurricanes 1/Panthers 3-Penguins 2/Predators 4-Islanders 3.
