Red Wings Recruit Another Member of the NHL Old Guard
Wednesday November 5, 2003
Steve Thomas stayed patient, and his patience paid off with a job at one of hockey's most desirable locations.
The 40-year-old forward turned down several contract offers over the summer because he and his family did not want to stray too far from their Toronto home. Today, Thomas has a one-year deal with the Detroit Red Wings, reportedly worth $1-million. The Red Wings need help up front. Henrik Zetterberg, recently described by coach Dave Lewis as the team's best forward, will miss four to six weeks with a broken leg. Thomas certainly does not add speed to the lineup. But he can take Zetterberg's place on the power play and perhaps help the Wings settle down after a staggering start to the season. Thomas is a 20-year veteran whose scoring has dropped off considerably in recent years. But he scored several key goals for the Anaheim Mighty Ducks during last season's playoff drive.
