Think Quick, Mike. The Tape's Rolling.

Interesting bit at ESPN.com, promoting Mike Modano as the new conscience of the NHL. Seems the Dallas Stars' captain is making an effort to tackle hockey's big issues. Columnist Jim Kelley approves, which is understandable, considering the dearth of quotable hockey players on the planet. But those who mount the soapbox should consider their words. One of Modano's recent shots questioned the spending habits of the guy who owns his team: "I think the (Texas Rangers) situation had a big trickle down effect on us. I think that has had a big impact on how we spend money." The poor Stars. All they did in the last two years was throw millions at Bill Guerin, Pierre Turgeon, Scott Young and Phillipe Boucher, among others. And what do they have to show for it? One non-playoff year and one second-round exit. Mike should look around the locker room before he points a finger at the boardroom.
