"Fleur-ee! Fleur-ee!"
Saturday October 11, 2003
Jiri Hudler was a healthy scratch for Detroit. Joni Pitkanen played like a veteran in Philadelphia. Tuomu Ruutu did not look good, but neither did the rest of the Blackhawks. Nathan Horton, Eric Staal and a handful of others came through unscathed. But the most impressive rookie debut in the NHL so far belongs to Marc-Andre Fleury of the Pittsburgh Penguins. After allowing a goal on the first shot of his pro career, the Penguins' new franchise player stoned the Los Angeles Kings for most of the night. Pittsburgh lost 3-0 (with an empty net goal), but Fleury's performance had the fans chanting his name before it was all over. Not bad for an 18-year-old, but can he keep it up for another six months? The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has the details.
