Fleury, Staal, Horton Are Ready To Roll
Monday October 6, 2003
The top three players from the 2003 NHL Entry Draft will all begin their pro careers this season. Goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury, selected number-one overall, signed with the Pittsburgh Penguins today, just before the 3:00 pm deadline for signing junior-aged players. Also in the last 24 hours, forward Eric Staal (number two) came to terms with the Carolina Hurricanes and forward Nathan Horton (number three) signed on with the Florida Panthers.
All three are 18 years old, and therefore subject to the rules and restrictions governing junior-aged players in the NHL. How they perform over the first ten games of the season will likely go a long way towards determining whether they spend the entire season in the big leagues. TSN.ca has details on the last-minute contract signings.
