A Nieuw Leaf
Wednesday September 10, 2003
He turns 37 today, and he'll celebrate by finishing his hockey career back home in Ontario. Joe Nieuwendyk has signed a one-year contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs. He might not be the scoring threat he used to be, but Nieuwendyk scored 25 goals as recently as two years ago, and he is one of the more respected competitors in the game. In assessing the deal, Damian Cox of the Toronto Star says that despite Nieuwendyk's age and injury troubles, this is a no-risk signing for the Leafs.
