The Best American Goalie Ever
Thursday September 4, 2003
After 14 seasons and a springtime that will live forever in the memories of New York Rangers' fans, Mike Richter retired this afternoon. Richter, 37, hasn't played since suffering a concussion last November. He leaves as the most successful goaltender in Rangers' history, and according to ESPN.com, as the best American goalie ever, by a long shot. In New York, of course, Richter earned immortality in 1994, when he helped silence the favorite taunt of opposing fans - "1940! 1940!" - for good. The New York Newsday revisits the Rangers' ride to remember.
