Jock Culture and Its Entitlements
Thursday July 24, 2003
Regardless of its outcome, the Kobe Bryant case is yet another reminder that celebrity athletes are not the wholesome, storybook heroes they are often made out to be. Laura Robinson has studied the culture of sport and its volatile notions of sexuality and masculinity. In this column for the Toronto Globe and Mail, she discusses pro athletes and the urge to score. The New York Daily News takes a different approach, saying athletes must maintain "constant vigilance in social and private settings." I'm no expert, but I suspect a little respect for other human beings goes a long way, too.
